Convert a Person into an Organization
Goal: Fix a constituent that was entered as an individual person but is really a company, foundation, or other organization — moving its organizational giving onto a proper organization record.
When to use this
Sometimes a gift comes in and the constituent is created as a person — for example "Globex Holdings" entered as a first/last name — when it should have been an organization. Converting promotes that record to a managed organization so its corporate giving rolls up correctly and it shows up under Constituents → Organizations.
This conversion is performed by Omnivo support on your behalf. If you spot a person who should be an organization, contact support with the constituent's name and they will run it.
What happens during a conversion
A new organization is created (or an existing match is reused) from the person's details, and the person is kept on as the organization's contact. The two halves of the constituent's history are handled differently:
Moves to the new organization — the involvements that make sense for a company:
- Donations and in-kind donations
- Recurring gifts
- Sponsorships
- Pledges
- Event ticket orders and registrations
Stays with the contact person — things only an individual can have:
- Volunteer hours
- Store purchases
- Homeowner applications
- Personal notes
Before anything is saved, support sees a preview of exactly what will move versus what will stay, so there are no surprises.
Entering the EIN
If you know the organization's EIN (federal tax ID), include it when you contact support. The EIN feeds donor receipts and duplicate detection, so support double-checks the exact value on a confirmation step before saving.
If a matching organization already exists
If an organization with the same name (or EIN) is already on file, the conversion can merge the person's organizational giving into that existing organization instead of creating a second one — keeping your organization list clean.
A conversion cannot be undone. The original person is kept as the organization's contact and marked inactive, and its corporate giving permanently moves to the organization. Support records a reason for every conversion for audit purposes.
