iPad Receipt Printer
The iPad register prints receipts and drawer slips on an Epson TM-m30III thermal printer connected by USB-C or Bluetooth. The cash drawer is wired to the printer, so the same job that prints a cash receipt also pops the drawer. Card receipts print here too. The card terminal only prints when no printer is paired, or when you ask it to.
Where to find it: on the iPad app, open the Settings tab and scroll to Receipt Printer.
Pair the printer once
- Power the printer on. For Bluetooth, pair it first in the iPad's Settings → Bluetooth. For USB-C, just plug it in.
- In the register app, open Settings → Receipt Printer and tap Pair Printer.
- Pick the printer from the list. If it doesn't appear but is plugged in over USB, tap Use Connected USB Printer.
- Back on the Settings screen the printer shows as Connected. Tap Test Drawer Kick to confirm the drawer pops.
Pairing is per iPad and survives signing out and closing the app.
It reconnects on its own
Once paired, the printer reconnects without any action from the cashier after the things that used to break it:
- The USB cable is unplugged and plugged back in.
- The iPad locks or the app is switched away and comes back.
- The app is closed and reopened.
- The printer is powered off and on.
The Receipt Printer section shows the live state: Connected, Connecting…, or Not connected with the reason. While it reads Not connected, printing a receipt still tries to reconnect first, so most of the time the sale just prints. If it stays disconnected, check the cable and that the printer is powered on, then tap Reconnect.
You do not need Forget Printer to recover from a lost connection. Use it only when you want to pair a different printer.
Card receipts
A card sale prints its receipt on this printer as soon as the payment is approved, without opening the drawer. The receipt shows the card brand, the last four digits, the authorization code, and how the card was read, so the customer keeps the same record the terminal slip used to give them.
Two things are different from cash:
- A card sale is never held up by the printer. The card has already been charged by the time the receipt prints, so if the printer is off or unplugged the sale still completes and the screen says what went wrong. Tap Print on Card Terminal to print on the terminal instead, or reprint from the Transactions tab once the printer is back. A Bluetooth reader (PAX D135) has no printer, so that button does not appear after a sale it ran.
- You can turn off automatic card receipts. In Settings → Receipt Printer, switch off Print card receipts automatically and the register prints a card receipt only when you tap Print Receipt on the Sale Complete screen. Cash receipts always print, because the drawer opens on the same job.
A register with no printer paired sends card receipts to the card terminal, as it did before, unless its reader is a PAX D135. That reader has no printer, so pair a receipt printer and reprint the receipt from Transactions.
Sold tags
Sold tags for items awaiting pickup print only on this printer; the card terminal can't print them, so the button is hidden when no printer is paired. A failed tag print never affects the sale: fix the printer, tap Retry, or print the tags later from Transactions. Reprinted tags carry a REPRINT line.
Cash sales and opening or closing the register wait for the printer
Three actions can't finish without the printer, because the drawer and the slips go through it: taking a cash payment, opening the register at the start of the day, and closing the register at the end. Before any of them commits, the register checks the printer link. If it is down you'll see Receipt printer not connected, and the register immediately starts looking for the printer on its own:
- It keeps checking every couple of seconds for about ten seconds, with a countdown and attempt counter on screen. Plug the cable in or power the printer on, and as soon as it answers the sale or the register open/close continues exactly as you entered it. No tap needed.
- If ten seconds pass with no printer, the screen says so and offers Retry Connection, which starts another search. Retry as many times as you need.
- Cancel is always available, even mid-search. For a cash sale you return to the tender screen with the amount still entered. Nothing is posted.
The check happens at the first tap (Cash, Open Register, Close Register) and again when you confirm (Complete Sale, the float count, the closing count), so a cable pulled mid-way is still caught. Card sales aren't held by this check (see Card receipts). A register that has never paired a printer isn't blocked either.
If a print fails
The register now says why. Common messages and what to do:
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| The printer connection was lost. | Check the cable or Bluetooth, then tap Reconnect in Settings or simply try the print again. |
| The printer cover is open. | Close the cover. |
| The printer is out of paper. | Load a new roll. |
| Paper is jammed in the printer. | Clear the jam and close the cover. |
| The printer did not respond in time. | Check that the printer is powered on. The receipt may still have printed, so look before printing again. |
A receipt that didn't print can always be reprinted from the Transactions tab.
