Pick Up and Complete Tasks
Goal: Know what you're responsible for during an event — or grab something useful to do when you're free — so the day runs smoothly.
Tasks vs. your slot
Your slot is the role you signed up for — that's the main thing you're doing. Tasks are specific units of work attached to the event:
- Sometimes the coordinator pre-assigns a task to you
- Sometimes a list of open tasks is available for anyone to claim
Not every event uses tasks; many keep things informal. When tasks are in play, the event will surface them clearly.
See your assigned tasks
The event page shows My Tasks — anything assigned to you specifically. Each task has a description, a priority, and (if relevant) a deadline within the day.
Read through these as soon as you arrive so you know the day's flow.
Pick up an available task
If you finish your assigned work or you're between things, check Available Tasks. These are open for anyone to claim. Pick one that fits your skills and energy level. Tap to claim — it's now yours.
Don't claim more tasks than you can actually finish; an unclaimed task that gets done is better than a claimed task that doesn't.
Marking tasks complete
When you finish a task, mark it complete. The coordinator can see status in real time, which helps them see whether the day is on track.
If you started a task and got stuck, hand it back rather than letting it sit incomplete — the coordinator can reassign or follow up.
When you're new
If you're new to volunteering at this affiliate, lean toward letting the coordinator assign you tasks rather than self-claiming. You'll get a feel for how this affiliate works, and the coordinator can match you to something that fits your experience.
