Link an Opportunity to a Project

Connecting a volunteer opportunity to a construction project keeps the two in sync: the opportunity appears on the project, and its volunteer hours roll up under the project in reporting (including the Volunteer Hours by Project report).

What "connected" means

An opportunity is connected to a project when the project is set on the opportunity itself. Once connected:

  • The opportunity shows a clickable project on its detail page.
  • The opportunity appears on the project's Volunteer Opportunities tab.
  • Volunteer hours logged on the opportunity roll up under the project in reports.

Ways to connect them

You can connect an opportunity to a project from whichever screen you're already on — they all set the same connection.

From the opportunity (create or edit). When creating or editing an opportunity, choose the project in the Project field. Leave it as Not linked to a project if it shouldn't roll up to one.

From the project's Volunteer Opportunities tab. Open the project, go to Volunteer Opportunities, and create the opportunity there — it's connected to that project automatically.

From a project task. When adding or editing a project task, you can create a new opportunity for it or link an existing one. Either way, the opportunity is connected to the task's project.

From the Link Entity card. On a project or an opportunity, use the Linked Entities card and link the two together. For a project and an opportunity, this also assigns the opportunity to the project, so it counts in reporting — not just as a cross-reference.

:::note Linking vs. assignment The Linked Entities card normally just cross-references records so you can jump between them. The project ↔ opportunity pair is special: linking them also makes the connection that drives the project's volunteer view and the hours roll-up. Other links (for example, a campaign to a fundraising event) are reference-only and don't change assignments or reporting. :::

Changing or removing the connection

Re-open the opportunity and change the Project field — pick a different project, or choose Not linked to a project to clear it.

To avoid surprises, connecting an opportunity that is already assigned to a different project never silently moves it. If you need to re-home it, change the Project field on the opportunity directly.
